Moving Targets - Toddler Photography for Parents

How many times have your attempted to get photos of your kid doing something crazy cute and funny with your DSLR only to find out that:

Kids are fast… and BLURRY!

Once they figure out how to crawl and wiggle, all bets are off. Taking photos of a moving target is a challenge but not impossible. With practice you capture the essence of your child, and maybe someone else’s. Kids are pure energy and curiosity and they change so quickly.

What you will learn:

  • how to focus on a moving subject while maintaining sharpness

  • iso/shutter speed/aperture

  • focal length for portraits

  • camera and lens speed

  • how to handle all lighting situations

  • camera settings for different situations

  • shooting manual and breaking all the rules

ALSO…

You’ll get an opportunity to practice on real moving toddlers - wear comfortable clothes and shoes because you will be moving A LOT!

Learn Your DSLR

Has your DSLR been sitting in a box since Christmas 2019?

Do the dials and buttons scare the crap out you and make you freeze in terror? It happens to the best of us. It’s hard enough to keep up with our phone camera… and on that note, why even learn your DSLR when cell phones are so great at it?

Because there is a difference. The image quality, pixel for pixel, is not the quite the same …. not yet. Trust me, I have tried to take nature photos with my phone and I’m always more pleased with what my Canon can do.

We’ll start at the very beginning by pulling out our manuals and turning the camera on. By the time you leave you will know:

  • What all those buttons and dials do!

  • Aperature/ Shutter Speed/ ISO and why each one is important

  • How to use a memory card and how to download your images to your device of choice

  • Lenses and focal lengths

  • What’s in a basic camera kit

  • The difference between raw and jpg and which one to use for the best images

  • Metering

  • White Balance

  • Photography styles and types

  • How to track moving subjects (like babies!)

What you will need:

  • DSLR Camera (or Mirrorless if you have one)

  • Lens for your camera

  • Memory Card

  • A device to drop your images to- iPad, iPhone, Laptop - once you are registered we’ll make sure we have what you need in terms of adapters to download your images

  • Battery for your camera and charger

  • Camera Manual - you can download all manuals online in pdf form if you don’t have the actual manual. Visit your camera manufacture web site for more information.

  • A Notebook

Investment: $175 (3 Hour Class) / 5 Participant Maximum
